Is MiroFish free?

The MiroFish software is free: it is open source under the AGPL-3.0, so you can download, run and modify it without paying a licence fee. Running it usually is not free. Self-hosted, you pay for the language model the agents run on and, beyond its free monthly quota, for Zep Cloud's graph memory, plus a server if you use one. Hosted services charge for running it for you; on MiroFish.co.uk the first Quick Study is free.

Written by MiroFish.co.uk, an independent hosted service built on the open-source MiroFish project, so read the cost comparison with that in mind. Upstream facts were checked against the MiroFish repository on 21 October 2026 (its documentation is unchanged since commit 39d8491).

The software: free under the AGPL-3.0

MiroFish is published on GitHub (666ghj/MiroFish) under the GNU Affero General Public License, version 3. You can use it for any purpose, read and change the code, and share it. The condition people most often miss: if you modify MiroFish and let other people use it over a network, the licence requires you to offer them the source of your modified version. MiroFish.co.uk does this at mirofish.co.uk/source.

What self-hosting costs

The upstream version calls two paid services, and its README is clear that usage adds up: it warns that consumption is high and suggests trying simulations with fewer than 40 rounds first.

  • The language model. The agents and the report run on the model you configure (LLM_API_KEY, LLM_BASE_URL and LLM_MODEL_NAME, for any API in the OpenAI SDK format), and the README recommends qwen-plus on Alibaba's Bailian platform. What you pay depends on the model's price, the size of your material, and the number of agents and rounds.
  • Zep Cloud. The graph memory runs on Zep Cloud (ZEP_API_KEY). The README says the free monthly quota is enough for simple usage; heavier use moves you onto a paid Zep plan.
  • A server, if you use one. On your own computer there is no hosting bill. A VPS or a one-click template (Hostinger and Zeabur both offer one) adds a server cost, and you still open and pay for the model and Zep accounts yourself.
  • Your time. Installing, updating, keeping the keys private and watching usage.

Because the bill depends on the model and the size of the run, the reliable way to estimate it is to run one small simulation and read the usage at your model provider and at Zep.

The fully local option: MiroFish-Offline

MiroFish-Offline, a community fork, replaces both paid services: local models through Ollama instead of a hosted API, and Neo4j Community Edition instead of Zep Cloud. That removes the per-use bills but needs capable hardware. Its README documents a minimum of 16 GB of RAM, 10 GB of VRAM for the 14b model, 20 GB of disk and 4 CPU cores, recommends 32 GB of RAM and 24 GB of VRAM for the 32b model, and says CPU-only mode works but is significantly slower.

What hosted MiroFish costs

A hosted service runs the engine, the model and the memory for you and charges for it. On MiroFish.co.uk the unit is a study: one complete simulation and its report, whatever the size of your document.

Which costs less for you?

It depends on how often you run it and what your time is worth. If you will run many simulations, want to choose the model and are comfortable operating the stack, self-hosting can cost less per run. If you want to test a decision now and then without opening model and Zep accounts, a hosted study has a price you know before you start.

Either way the first step is free: the code is on GitHub, and the first Quick Study on MiroFish.co.uk costs nothing.

Questions people ask

Is MiroFish open source?

Yes. It is published on GitHub (666ghj/MiroFish) under the GNU AGPL-3.0.

Do I need an API key to use MiroFish?

To self-host the upstream version, yes: a language-model key (LLM_API_KEY, with LLM_BASE_URL and LLM_MODEL_NAME) and a Zep Cloud key. MiroFish-Offline replaces both with local services. A hosted service needs no keys from you.

Is there a free trial of hosted MiroFish?

On MiroFish.co.uk every account gets one free Quick Study once its email address is confirmed: five discussion rounds and a three-section report. No card is needed.

How can I use MiroFish for free?

Run MiroFish-Offline on hardware you already own; or self-host the upstream version and stay within Zep's free quota and your model provider's free allowance, if it has one; or use the free Quick Study on MiroFish.co.uk.

Can I use MiroFish commercially?

The AGPL-3.0 allows commercial use. If you modify MiroFish and offer it to others over a network, you must offer them the source of your version.
